Now, this one’s weird! Why on earth, would a girl want to be on the BOYS’ national cricket team?? I mean, it’s okay to be ambitious, and it’s also okay to be appreciative of a certain boys’ cricket team, but wouldn’t she have a little more sense, considering her visibly obvious physical assets, than to dress up like a man to squeeze into the desired team? Whoa! Didn’t the men have balls (as in eyes) to see what the thing was-a man or a woman?! I mean, they’re pretty visible, aren’t they!
Anyways, Veera (Rani Mukherjee) is a village girl, who lives small but dreams big, as is given in Hindi films. She works for a local naatak company but has dreams of playing the big league, cricket, and that too with no less than Sachin Tendulkar and Dhoni.
And then there’s Rohan (Shahid Kapoor), the captain of a county cricket team in England, who packs his bags to return to India in favour of helping his father’s loser cricket team, which apparently has been losing matches continuously for eight years in a row.
Phir kyat tha….apni Veera Kaur puts on a turban, pastes a moustache, jumps into a lungi (the works!)…and becomes Veer Pratap Singh. And not surprisingly, she earns a place in Rohan’s team by the sheer brilliance of her game. Ab ye to hona hi tha ji!
This film is all rolled into one, peppy music, a riot of colours on screen, decent looking performances, patriotism, everything. Agar gaane se kaam nahi chala to cricket se to film chal hi jayegi…! Rakhi Sawant, as Shanno Amritsari, another reel (read real) life nautanki girl, who works for a certain Jigri Yaar Dance Company, has some enviable moments with Veera, and so the two have some good onscreen company, as well.
The film, from its promos, looks like a regular masala mix, with some peppy desi bhangra beats thrown in, some cheesy cricket matches in between, and if that’s not enough then there’s Rani Mukherjee shaking a leg in lungi…and last but not the least, if there’s anything else left after “…bhangra, bistar, beer, bater..” you have Rakhi Sawant to do the honours…
This Yash Raj film is directed by debutant director Anurag Singh and produced by Aditya Chopra. DIL BOLE HADIPPA stars Shahid Kapoor, Rani Mukherjee, Anupam Kher along with Rakhi Sawant & Sherlyn Chopra, Dalip Tahil, Vallabh Vyas, Vrajesh Hirjee. DIL BOLE HADIPPA releases worldwide on 18th September 2009. |
