It was in 2002 that he was first seen on the silver screen in AB KE BARAS, but it's only now, a full seven years later, that everyone is talking about his performance - certainly not for his debut film, but for his Kabir act in the recently released JAIL. The film didn't really make it to the chartbuster’s list, but it got Aarya Babbar his long due recognition.
I'm meeting him at the J W Marriot and he is all smiles, obviously cherishing his moment of triumph.
“Honestly, I'm loving everything at the moment!” he says excitedly, simultaneously also ordering sandwiches and coffee. “One, because my film released and I got good reviews, and also my dad (Raj Babbar)'s election results were declared and he won! So, it’s a wonderful moment in the house too. Everyone is happy and everyone is together!”
Though his performance in JAIL was praised, didn't it bother him that the film didn't fare too well at the box office? “Well, I don’t know if I felt bad or good, because when I was reading the reviews, the most important thing for me was how everyone liked me in the film,” he says honestly. “After a very long time, I had done something. Many people were also saying that this is the high point of my career but I really want to tell them there is no high point, this is the only point of my career. This is the starting point of my career. I think it’s when an actor gets noticed that he exists and that is the starting point. That is what JAIL is for me; it's extremely special to me. Kafi log hain jinki life jail mein jaake barbaad ho jati hai, main eklota actor hoon jiski jindagi jail mein jaake aabaad hogayi hai! (Many people have had their lives ruined in jail but I’m the only actor whose life has prospered after going to jail!)” Of course, he is referring to the film JAIL, which he considers his debut film…
“I do not consider AB KE BARAS as my debut. I was hardly 19 - 20 then and there are times when you make a mistake and get up and realise it and decide to try and get it right again.” It's good to acknowledge one's mistakes, and Aarya doesn't shy away from this fact… “What went wrong was ME! A guy my age being a reincarnation of a freedom fighter, and then bashing up 30-50 people at one go; it's slightly unconvincing! However, the director believed in me, my family believed that it was a very good launch because Mr. Raj Kanwar had launched Shah Rukh Khan, and, looking at it from all perspectives, it seemed like the best move to make. I was always very excited to get inside the industry. And when it happened I jumped into it…You know, adha kacha adha pakka wali cheez hoti hai and that's what happened!
