The Amrita-Vinod Affair
|
July 1989, CineBlitz reported a headline-hitting story about the Amrita-Vinod love affair that crashed under the weight of infidelity and unfulfilled expectations . . . Now we revisit the one of the most sensational affairs in filmdom, which at time shook the entire industry.
The affair has gone kaput! Amrita Singh and Vinod Khanna have split. And while he's playing the field with the likes of a Manisha Kohli and a host of other females, Ms. Singh is now sitting at home nursing another broken heart.
Amrita practically threw away her relationship with Ravi Shastri. There are people who insist it was because of his middle-class background and mentality, but the fact also remains that Ravi couldn't take Amrita's growing affection for Vinod Khanna. Presumably a sucker for a sob story, Vinod felt sorry for Dingy who couldn't take Ravi's innumerable flings, when he went out to play his Tests. She put up a brave 'I-don't-care-a-damn' attitude but being possessive to the point of smothering, Amrita couldn't stand the idea of her man playing the field.
That's when Vinod Khanna actually stepped in. He listened, he spoke of his life, the depression he was going through, how he needed a strong woman, etc. It wasn't surprising when Amrita began to feel emotionally involved with Vinod, because she too, is a very vulnerable girl.
The beginning was plain euphoria - secret meetings, telephone calls, roses, presents. It was like a teenage college romance with Vinod going all out to woo the tough Ms. Singh. A normally aloof and quiet person, film units were shocked when he shouted and loudly declared his love for 'little Dingy' Speculation ran rife, with a definite marriage in the offing.
